Project Description
Meet Mike McNiss
Millville, NJ (Cumberland County)
Millville Clean Communities Coordinator since 2009
Mike, what Strategies have you implemented for the city of Millville?
Wearing a couple of hats, I am the Recycling / Clean Communities Coordinator.
My strategy was to combine code enforcement and education to bring positive results.
Knowing the common factor for Clean Communities and Recycling is education and
Code enforcement. Instead of claiming that enforcement is not my job. I asked myself
how serious do I want this to work, so I went to my Municipality and asked for the
authority to enforce the city Ordinances.
How do you enforce violations?
Now when the residents are not following the city Ordinances I have the authority
to issue a violation warning notification. If not corrected in a reasonable time frame a
ticket is issued.
Do you give warnings as well?
I know that residents come and go, I believe in giving the benefit of doubt.
I always start with educating. When I come to a house over an issue I tell them
what the problem is, then show the Ordinance. I then give them time to correct the problem
or issue a ticket.
If you approach people, sincerely to help them understand the city Ordinance
by educating today, I influence tomorrow. To educate well I have to be accessible,
I give everyone I talk with my cell number and tell them to call me whenever they
have a question. That gets you closer to the public, your not untouchable.
My goal is to educate residents and to enforce Millville City Ordinances.
Who is Mike outside of work?
